Came across, this wonderful list of 31 rules by which runners should live by for the year 2014.
- Call yourself a runner. If you run, you’re a runner. Don’t be afraid.
- Set a bigger goal than you ever thought possible. And figure out what you need to do to get there. Then do it.
- Change your shoes more often.
- Eat a little cleaner, and enjoy the added energy.
- After crossing the finish line of an upcoming race, stop to cheer on other runners and congratulate them on their accomplishments.
- Join a running group.
- Spend more time analyzing your training data. But don’t forget that sometimes you shouldn’t record the data at all. And just run :p
- Run more hills.
- Sign-up to volunteer at a trail race’s aid station.
- Take a few weeks off, and use that time to try out a new sport or activity.
- Do your strength training.
- Thank your spectators and supporters, and treat them to a special surprise.
- Put in the warm-up and cool-down miles.
- Read more running books. Learn from them.
- Find a training partner.
- Try to set a new 5k PR, even if you’re focused on marathons or ultras.
- Treat yourself to new socks. Maybe even ones with a little compression.
- Foam roll more religiously.
- Plan out your schedule now, at the beginning of the year, so you can train properly.
- Don’t be afraid to reward yourself after tough workouts or long runs.
- Get up and run in the morning more often.
- Talk a non-running friend into signing up for a 5k with you. And run with them the whole race.
- Attend a race just to cheer on runners you don’t know.
- Stretch.
- Return to a race you struggled with in the past.
- Experiment with new ideas by committing to different 10-30 day challenges.
- Start a run streak, even if it is just for one week.
- Keep up with long runs, even if you aren’t training for any particular race.
- Run on trails.
- Force yourself to break out of routine and try new routes.
- Most importantly, be proud of every run. Be proud that you are a runner.

Happy 2014!
(You’ll guess that #4 is my favourite.)
I love tip number ten! I recently have been experimenting with some weight training and I am finding I love it just as much as running 🙂
My plan for this year is to learn Swimming and try to pick up cycling again, apart from usual running…Variation is always fun.. 🙂

Some great thoughts here. Several are fairly obvious but worth remembering, nonethless.

Running On Your Mind…
Good stuff. I do a lot of these things, but there are a few I could add.
Same here…Some of these points I already do, and some of them I ideally should try to do.
Great list and a good reminder to all runners. Even though I’ve run a 1/2 marathon, numerous 5 and 10k’s I still struggled with saying “I’m a running”!
Yes, we really don’t know when we can go out and say we are runners..But I guess, a point comes when you don’t need to say anything, but other’s themselves will say, “that guy/gal is a runner”.. 🙂

I like # 23. Whenever I get a chance, I try to attend a race just to cheer, even if I don’t know any of the runners. It’s motivating like nothing else. It’s how I got marathon-fever.
Excellent post. Some things I’ve never even though about doing. I will set out to do 5, 6, 9, 18, 23, and 29.
And I will try to focus on 7,8, 11, 15 and 19..
Excellent, excellent list! Thanks for sharing! I definitely need to be much better about a bunch of those…
Welcome mate..We all need to definitely follow some of these points, and may this year we do that..
Wonderful post! I think the biggest one is #1 – so many people don’t know when they become a “runner.” Being a runner is a state of mind.
Ani, I had read a line somewhere which I think aptly capture the point: “”The nonrunner gets cranky when he aches. The runner says, ‘Alive, man, alive!'”. The day we start feeling more alive while running, I think we can call ourselves ‘runner’.. !!

Wow! I love this list from Mind of Mediocre. I want to do them all, but as you might have read, my fav is #2, setting a bigger goal than I ever though possible. 1,000 miles and a marathon this year?! Yikes!
Which rule is calling out to you?
Number 5 is a nice idea. I’ll be doing that one.
